A R T I S T S T A T E M E N T
In my practice I make video and sound art using old family photos and found sound, to bring domestic memories that many people can connect to, back to life. The pictures which I use date back to the 1920s, so the memories in the pieces I create are not my own or accurate, however this represents how no memory can be truly accurate to what actually happened.

In my work I have experimented with a number of different ways of trying to reanimate the pictures I work with and the memories behind them, this has included adding videos to the still images as well as videoing myself in front of them, to bring the past and present together. As time is a key element of video pieces this relates to the theme of the past. I use video as it’s a medium which I can use to distort and reanimate a picture which helps bring them back to life in a distorted way.

As my work is digital, I have looked at relating memories to digital media and whether our brains, specifically memories, can be uploaded or whether they will be able to in the future, possibly using brain scans. This research has fed into my work, and for some pieces has led me to think of myself as a computer which is trying to piece together a memory from pictures and sound clips. A piece where I explored this is ‘Tilda’ where the subject moves around the composition in a glitchy way, as if the child is moving but because of a computer software. Through making the child move again, I am giving life to the picture.

One of the ways I choose to show my work is on screens behind picture frames. I do this so that people will look at them, expecting them to be still, and then be surprised when they move. The frames I use are all around 6”x4” but are different styles. Through using different styles of frames to display my work in, I make the pieces more relatable for different people as they can identify similarities to their own family pictures. Through making the audience think about their own family pictures, I am bringing their own pictures back to life in their heads.
